lumaaq and the whale

aisa amittuk

akulivik

14 ½ x 10 x 5 inches
37 x 25 ½ x 13 cm

$500 CAD

DESCRIPTION

The tale of “Lumaaq and the Whale” is one of revenge and retribution.  It is about a woman who mistreated her blind son and the son, Lumaaq who, when one day he recovered his eyesight, took his mother to the biggest whale in a nearby whale pod and attached her to the whale so that she would be, in punishment for the way she had treated him, dragged by the whale forever….  When conditions are right, one can apparently hear, as the legend goes, her cry coming from the sea:  “Lumaaq!  Lumaaq! This sculpture shows the mother, her eyes open very wide, hanging on for dear life in the ripples of water made by the advancing whale and being led by a cord attached to a harpoon in the biggest whale of the pod.  It is made of  well polished dark soapstone.

14 x 4 x 4 1/2 inches

$600 CAD

DESCRIPTION

From the Inuit world of myths and storytelling comes this wonderful, imaginative sculpture of four Inuit heads which have been separated from their bodies by the northern lights.  The expression of incredulous, disbelieving surprise on their faces reflects so well the shock they must have felt when the northern lights descended upon them. Carved on one side, is an igloo under a full moon and on the other side, two inukshuks which the Inuit put up in the vast expanses of snow in order to help them find their way to their villages up north.

AUTHENTICITY

Creation-arctique ! AuthenticityIn order to protect both the artist and the collector, the Canadian Government has registered the igloo symbol as a trademark.  The is often referred to as the “Igloo sticker”.  The igloo symbol also appears on a certificate which often accompanies a sculpture.  This tag certifies that the Inuit sculpture you are purchasing is an authentic piece of Inuit art.

However, this “igloo tag” is of relative value and should not be your only guarantee that you are buying authentic Inuit art. What is also important is the trust you have in the reputation of the seller with whom you are dealing.  A reputable Inuit art dealer will not sell you an object under false pretences. Please keep in mind that the tags might have been lost for some of the older Inuit/Eskimo carvings and perhaps, in some cases, not have existed.

About US

My name is Jacques. I fell in love with the first Inuit sculpture I saw when I was a university student, age 21.  That love has never diminished.  On the contrary, it has bloomed and been enriched by information, dialogue, and discovery of various styles and artists.  In 1999, my wife, Rose, and I created this virtual art gallery, Création arctique, and to our great delight, found many people who shared our curiosity about and taste for Inuit/Eskimo art.

Our mission is to present to you a wide variety of Inuit/Eskimo art. We are fully bilingual and we can answer your queries both in French and in English. All enquiries are answered within 24 hours, usually much sooner.  We will gladly send you pictures of different angles of any art piece in which you might be interested. You may wish to contact us via e-mail at creationarctique@videotron.ca .You might also wish to phone or fax us at 514-733-4878. We look forward to hearing from you in the near future, and to having the pleasure of sharing our beautiful art with you.
